For peace and quiet, try Winchester Cathedral (admission charge £5). The bones of Saxon kings are housed in caskets, Jane Austen is here too with Izaak Walton. A very fine decorated Bible is on display. Volunteers are available to assist as you walk round on the beautiful medieval tiles. The gravestones are interesting, but walk to the old city gate and enjoy St Swithun-upon-Kingsgate. Winchester Cathedral was used for filming the Da Vinci Code. Another mystery surrounds King Arthur. See www.hants.gov.uk/greathall. Hints can be found in the beautiful Round Table attached to the wall in Winchester Castle Great Hall, sadly all that now remains. The inscription describes it as “rownde table of kynge Arthur with 24 of his namyde knyattes” |
